Of all the mech shows out there I DIDN’T want to get into, it would have to be any of the Gundam shows that have come out after 2001. I used to be a huge fan of Gundam, but I changed into a crotchety jaded old anime mech watcher after I saw Sunrise transform into the panderer it is now.
Essentially mech shows where the mechs take a back seat to all the love triangle, mommy/daddy issue, overly complicated political drama are WAY too common! I’m TIRED of shows about young people acting and toiling on about the bullshit that they would do to mirror our real life. Anime needs to bring the mecha back without all the camel toed, questionably transsexual characters they can’t seem to trust sales numbers without. What is WITH that? Bring on the mecha and the monsters and make people secondary for once!
Even though anime may be declining on a whole, the mechs always seem to get sexier. I’m tempted to watch Gundam 00 because of the sexy throne mecha, but lack of overall free time and patience to find the episodes has kept my ship upright. 00 mecha have some potential (great chest designs), I just don’t wanna be “that guy” who downloads 8 million episodes just to find 5 minutes of a few mecha that I like.
Anyone seen Gundam 00 and can comment on it?

I can definitely agree with your sentiments of how Gundam has ‘downplayed’ the mechas. With all the characters’ whining, complaining, and angst I just want a Gundam to go berserk and stomp on them. Of course that’s my opinion. >> At least Gundam Wing held a healthy balance of the humans and mecha.
But as for Gundam 00, I’ve seen some of it; just the first few episodes. I love the designs but unfortunately the series seems to rely too heavily on the political drama. So far the first few episodes don’t have as much personal character dramas as Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny. But unfortunately the political drama seriously down plays the mecha and makes everything seem like a slow soap opera of newscasters.
‘Til a good Gundam show comes out that highlights the mecha more, I’ll stick to watching GaoGaiGar, J-Decker, and some of the lesser known mecha shows. At least they let the mecha get more than 2 minutes of screen time per episode.
OMG Gaogaigar had SO much heart! Final was off the chain, in fact, WATCH THIS!!:
As for J-Decker, it’s on my list but no one endeavoured to translate the whole thing. =/ Also, we need more Escaflowne.
Aww, cute kitty! Is that your cat, RB?
J-Decker is supa-kakkoii (at least, I *think* I got that right)! Being a bit of a Headmasters fan, I amuse myself by pretending Minerva Bot is Deckerd’s girlfriend… but what would she make of that cross-dressing episode..?
Thanks again for that Christmas pencil you rustled up for us, too. It still makes me grin!
Hee! ^-^
ROTFLOL! That video was great! Gotta love GaoGaiGar, but GGG Final was a little bit of a let down for me. They should have made it longer.
I decided not to wait for J-Decker to be translated, I might not understand everything they say in the RAW version but I understand enough to know what’s going on. Oh, yes Escaflowne is definately another great mecha show.
Heh, Minerva and Deckerd. XD I remember that episode, Deckerd in a dress and wig wouldn’t work well for undercover work. But its still funny to see. My favorite episode is when Drillboy and Dumpson had to be placed in little toy sized bodies. XDXDXDXD
I also love Headmasters, that was the start of some of the best Japanese Transformers ever. Masterforce was also good but my fav is Transformers: Victory. X3 Gotta love Star Saber.
theres not enough A.I. mech shows on tv…
I agree with you on your ‘ramble’, but that’s what sales.. and profit is very important to these companies so they do what sales. Of course in the long run it will probably bite them in the ass. Because if your passionate about what you do, money normally follows. Well if you play your cards right. (At least all of the books I have read about successful people say this)
Samurai Afro (I haven’t watched it) but apparently its selling good.. that guys passionate about anime and is making money now.
I agree with you though.. more mecha, less emotional baggage. (In Gurren Lagann sorta worked out great though..)
