The eating thing is largely a hold over from being human and is sometimes necessary for Guardia (who are the lesser evolved machine). Taking in food for the Guardia increases body mass ratio and it doesn't matter what is consumed (though Cheska didn't know this). The total body mass of a Guardia in human form will determine how big she is in mech form and how much ammo she has. Expending ammo and losing armour affects the human mode adversely. Basically, if you fire too many rockets, you lose weight fast enough to hurt yourself. So fighting Guardia must eat on top of what they absorb generally to gain battle advantage. Guardia aware of their nature typically eat after a battle but can survive indefinitely without it. Anything consumed is reconstituted into a part of the body. Lyron's case is very different and anything Lyron consumes is utterly destroyed (but more on that later!). I think the idea behind having a mouth is largely a Japanese phenomenon. Perhaps a more humanoid face makes you a better avatar if you happen to be piloted by a hero who's human. Like God who made man in his “own image”. But having a mouth is not necessary because the mecha can communicate without mouths and empathetically as well. I guess I'm influenced to heavily by Japanese anime and games. I have to admit, it doesn't seem like finding out how they work is a high priority either, I don't think Terratio'd know where to start. Even if he figured out how to rebuild himself, all he'd have is a drone at most. Knowing only part of how Mashina work is part of what makes them so interesting. In the game you controlled mecha that had a finite power source, I.E. every action they took in combat burned up a set % of energy. But by spending a round of inactivity they could also recharge a set percentage of energy. All RPG fantasy aside, I figure that this meant that technology had reached the point where mechas came standard with some sort of energy replacement system so they wouldn't die in the middle of combat. As this applies to Jotun: Their cores probably come with some sort of function that kicks in whenever energy usage falls below a certain point. The act of "meditation" is just a nice way of saying a mecha needs to sit on his ass for 4 hours to power through the next 96 hours. But you're right. It isn't very realistic for a battery to recharge on simple "meditation" alone, which means there IS an unknown factor. Our ideas of energy and energy storage come from what we know from our current technology and it's not known what future energy sources and capabilities will be developed. To my knowledge the fuel cell is the only self regenerating power source we currently have.
